  •  Why yes because they are impure (5+ / 0-)

And really, how bad can losing the Senate be?

    •  They could change. (12+ / 0-)

The fact is that if they get their way, all they will do is give more power to the Tea Party types who are fanning the flames of discontent amongst the "great unwashed".

What FDR and Johnson understood about this country was that paying attention to the "great unwashed" and giving something to vote for was a far more politically powerful position to be in than just stirring up anger and resentment.

The Democrats have chosen not to stir up anger and resentment, but have largely shied away from giving the great unwashed masses much of a lift.  That has given an in-road to the Republican strategy of stirring up anger and resentment.

ACA might have powerful political implications for the Democrats going forward, but not if the Democrats participate in dismantling Medicare and Social Security.  The cynics will win the day if that comes to pass and that gives power to the Republicans.

So, really the Democrats have a choice here.  If they think that there is a fair trade between ACA and Medicare for instance, they will get slaughtered at the polls.  They have to strengthen and expand government programs like Social Security and Medicare, if they want to keep their power.  They have to pick a side and be strong on that side.  They can't be baby-halving centrists and expect to prevail.  2010 was a great example of how that will work out for them.

      •  ACA may be a powerful factor someday (4+ / 0-)

but it is driving people stark raving mad right now, like for example, ME, who was on hold again today for over an hour until my phone battery died.  ACH!

We read the NSA can track 5,000,000,000 phone calls a day but the ACA Help Desks seem to be able to handle about 5.

Democrats need to demonstrate competence.  If they want to reform something, reform it.  Make it efficient.  Make it cost less to operate.  Make it friendly.  Make it work. Democrats once did that but it requires effort not spin.  Reform does not mean cutting benefits and cutting services.  It means making programs better.

    •  You're right, of course -- We ARE helpless (2+ / 0-)

      Banks will  NOT be regulated.
      Pensions will NOT be protected
      Prisoners will NOT be released.
Jobs  (of the non--Walmart kind) will NOT be created.

And there is nothing that any of "us" can do about it and nothing the Democratic Establishment WILL do about it.

We are: helpless, helpless, helpless.  And getting more comfortable with that fact every day.

      THIS is a metaphor:

As anyone working in Child Protection knows:  when there are two parents,  one is the Abuser, the other is the Enabler.

"The Enabler" often has her/his own tragic story to tell ... "reasons" ... "circumstances" ... "extenuations" ....

None of which help the child of course ... but all of which have to be taken into consideration to the credit of the "co-victim" -- because of common decency and simple justice.

Too bad about "the kid," though.

      End Metaphor
