  •  All the Miyazake movies are terrific BTW (7+ / 0-)

if you haven't sought out the others. I'd say Howl's is quite different between the book and the movie, but I do like them both. Some of them are great for all ages and some are fairly dark, but they are all really quite different from American movies and very worthwhile.

My favorite Diana Wynne Jones is the Dark Lord of Derkholm. It's on the goofy side and the plot is that this particular universe is a tourist destination, and the populace is sick of portraying all these fantasy cliches for them.

Fry, don't be a hero! It's not covered by our health plan!

    •  Archer's Goon by DWJ I'd rank first. (7+ / 0-)

Howl's was my first DWJ read, and i felt miyazake had done an interpretation rather than a visual retelling, but of course for great artists that's more than permitted, it's hoped.

I read Howl's when it was published, because my job required it, and how often is that rewarding on its own, right?  Dark Lord was my 2nd DWJ, years later.  I had heard of it and Archer's Goon from a colleague, but AG wasn't buyable hardly anywhere. When i finally found it, it freakin' blew my soxoff. I never expected that kind of deep reach into childhood fears, far less so magnificently and with such kindness & empathy - it made DWJ my hero. I think i've read everything she's had in book form, and her passing just 2 months after Diana Norman (whose Fitzempress Law was going for over $200 last time I looked {never thought my copy would become an investment...}) was a 1-2 punch.

The mediocre are never missed. The magnificent are like losing the friend of your heart. ~sigh~

This is a list of 76 universities for Rush Limbaugh that endorse global warming denial, racism, sexism, and GOP lies by broadcasting sports on over 170 Limbaugh radio stations.
