Exactly.  Just because the man is gay doesn't mean he's infallible and a great leader.  He could be corrupt as hell and harbor a right wing economic agenda.  He may be for marriage equality, but he's also for economic inequality.  That's not progress.

His party formed an alliance with two parties on the Left, with the result that his second in command is a Socialist. A good sign I would think.

regarding Luxembourg. However, the GDP is about $80,000 per capita and the country is considered the sixth best in the world in terms of income equality.

      •  Good sign, but.... (0+ / 0-)

        Looks like a good sign.

I just dislike when people assume that because a candidate is gay that they will automatically be an awesome president or PM.  I remember a Dutch politician a few years ago who was running for a seat in Parliament.  He was openly gay, and many on the left heaped praise on him.  It turned out he was a far right xenophobe who wanted to stop all immigration.

Just because a candidate or an elected official is gay, that doesn't make him or her automatically awesome. However, for anyone who's gay and out to be elected to such a high level position is still very rare. If it becomes so routine that nobody cares whether he or she does a good job, and that nobody any longer ascribes their success or failure to his or her sexual orientation, we will truly have achieved equality.

We have now had one African-American president. We'll know have made progress when we've had such a variety of races, ethnicities, genders and sexualities in the Oval Office that such things become a matter of complete indifference.
