  •  Who's self-interest? (4+ / 0-)
The fact that I am a member of the group in question earns me challenges that it is only self-interest that spurs me on.
If you end poverty, my money loses value.

If you end discrimination, I will have no one to feel better than.

If you achieve your life goals, my children may not achieve theirs.

The privileged always complain that any "new" right or method to promote economic justice comes at their expense. The "you're greedy"/self-interest  argument is always the first line of defense against those of us who strive for a better world. Is it really surprising that the oppressed fight first and hardest to end injustices that affect them personally? Or that the privileged will do everything in their power to keep and increase that power for them and their heirs?

Everyone fears losing what little they have. We, the slightly more oppressed than the ever fearful privileged ones, have so little. Maybe, that is what allows us to risk everything in a bid to make this world a better place for all children, not just the chidden of the rich and privileged.

Yes, I'm the real Lia Whirlwind. Do you hear anybody else screaming?
