didn't help. i'm a long time fan, but he has handled this about as poorly as was possible.

    •  It could have been better, I agree. But I followed (6+ / 0-)

the weeks of baiting and trolling of his diaries, and when the racism accusations (and warning) came, I can't blame him for thinking it was all part of the plan. Maybe he's not well-suited for the site, but a large number of people were deliberately gunning for him from day one, and given the subsequent race-baiting accusations, I question the "welcoming" site mythology in that regard.

My final assessment is that almost nobody, from top to bottom, handled this ugly incident very well, FWIW.

      •  no question (13+ / 0-)

a lot of people were after him, but he played into their hands. he could have handled it the exact opposite way, rising above, and they would have been even more angry, because they wouldn't have had any way to attack him.

the cartoon hurt and angered a lot of people. had he responded by explaining that he didn't intend that, and that he will genuinely try to more conscious of racist stereotype imagery, while continuing to make hard-hitting commentary, the reaction would have been very different. his deliberate lack of understanding or empathy, his flatly dishonest hyperbole about what happened, and his attempt to play the martyr have been ugly.

        •  While I think the reaction of some of the more (0+ / 0-)

disingenuous who were attacking him from day one would have been exactly the same, no matter what his reaction, I certainly agree that he played into their hands and that most genuine and sincere observers would have been more sympathetic to him had he not reacted in quite the way he did.

But being accused flat-out of racism, given his profession and the clientele he has, is a pretty serious and career-damaging charge, and I still think he has a right and need to defend himself against it publicly.
