  •  Actually flags should only be lowered as a sign (0+ / 0-)

    of surrender.

That's where the whole lowering the flag comes from.

It's so prostituted now it really has no meaning.

I worked in a small rural hospital in Maine for three years.  I bet the flag at the Post Office was at half mast 30% of the time.
There was no local radio, no local TV and only a small weekly paper.  I had no idea why the flag was lowered.  And it was not being ordered so by the Commander In Chief.  Some national political figure, maybe Ford, died while I was up there, but that was the only time I knew why the flag was lowered.

The lowering is over used and mis used, does it really matter?

I drove past a bank in DeSoto, Texas with the flag at half mast, on the way to the vets.  When I got to the vets I asked who had died, and was told it was the bank manager's wife.
No other flag I saw that day was lowered.

It has no real meaning any more.

If you fly a flag outside your house on a flag pole and your dog dies, you can lower your flag to half mast and the feds won't come to your door because you broke the code on how to use the US flag.
