Elton John is rich--he gets to act all noble and walk around knowing nothing will happen to him.  I don't buy his act.

Not all of them are in jail. Judge not.

three were arrested and the other two fled the country to avoid being arrested.  I don't think Elton John fears the same treatment.

    •  What has happened to the members of Pussy Riot (4+ / 0-)

that were tried and found guilty and sent to the gulag is a crime against humanity.

What they did as political protest and what Elton John does as entertainment have nothing in common. It doesn't make sense to compare them.

I see no reason to blame Elton John for his celebrity, and the fact that he didn't "desecrate a church" with a performance of political protest, is one of the significant differences between his ability to make pro-LGBT statements in Russia freely and being arrested. I think Pussy Riot is an amazing group of people who live their protest on the edge. They are incredibly brave and important.

It doesn't make sense to compare them. I get that the injustice and brutality in the punishment of the women found guilty and imprisoned, particularly Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, who has been on a hunger strike at the penal colony (death camp?) to which she has been sent.

You can find Elton John disingenuous or egotistical or somehow morally/ethically lacking for agreeing to perform in Russia at all. I tend to agree that Russia needs to be treated like South Africa during apartheid. But the message he delivered is still important. And if I have a bone to pick with Elton John (and frankly, I don't think about him all that much), I'm not going to focus my animus on a comparison between him and Pussy Riot. Not productive or relevant. Why they were arrested and imprisoned has nothing to do with why Elton John is not arrested and imprisoned.

Also, don't forget that they are WOMEN: they are witches in the eyes of the church, and they deserve to be broken and punished. It is the other side of the anti-gay laws in Russia and those laws deserve to be battled by everyone with a conscience.
