  •  That is why I used the conditional ... could .. (3+ / 0-)

Not disagreeing about first past the post voting system making it very hard as an understatement. The Labour Party is lost and there is no way to shift it leftwards, forget even making it supportive of Trade Unions. I completely agree that if we could get PR voting system, things could change quickly. We are going to do the electoral thing slowly, start in areas where there is more sympathy. This is a broad left party, it differs from the Trade Union and Socialist coalition.

There have been several parties since I have moved here 20 years ago, socialist alliance and respect among them. This is the first one that is not based on a federation of existing left parties (it is one member-one vote) and in which there is no charismatic leader (e.g., George Galloway in Respect) ... Ken Loach's direct proposal about not voting on aims and platforms was rejected at conference. I cannot imagine Galloway standing for it.

What is also different now (and which hearkens back to the old days of the Independent Labour Party and earlier groups) is that there are no alternatives to neoliberalism among the current crop of political parties.

    •  Haven't watched the videos yet. (3+ / 0-)

But later on when I put the PJs on I'll settle down and watch them.

I think this is very exciting.

Are labor groups involved? They should be sick of the so-called Labor Party by now.

I don't think the Progressive Era would have ever happened without the Socialist Party of America constantly gnawing on the right heel of the Democratic Party. But the Socialist Party was deeply involved in the labor movement from the start. Debs was the leader of the great ARU. We all know of Mother Jones and her role as a great union organizer and Socialist Party speaker for many years. etc etc.

      •  Most of the Trade Union movement (3+ / 0-)

bureaucracy is still trying to shift the Labour Party left; it will not work ... there are lots of individual union members in the group. We will probably not allow for affiliation of the trade unions, but will encourage trade union members to keep on joining. Labour is trying to make individual membership rather than affiliation of trade unions. A trade union policy will need to be clearly established and I think that will bring in more people once it is completed. To say the least, we are not hostile to trade unions and strongly encourage a strong left-wing perspective. Getting rank and file on board will help us and hopefully help them find a group to articulate their needs.
