    What a real Democrat would do would be to dismantle the war machine we built to fight in the 40's which we not only never dismantled but escalated to have a pissing contest with the Russians.

    What ails this country is directly related to the fact that it has been on a total war footing since Dec. 7, 1941.

      think a "real" Democrat would do - if he could do it without congress.  Unfortunately....

      I'm not exactly defending Star Wars here but, in the late 1940s (yes, I recognize the wall dates to '61), when the Soviets refused to allow an orderly return to peace and the establishment of democracy in Europe, there was a very good reason to believe that another war in Europe was inevitable.  In fact, during the times around the Airlift and the establishment of Communist puppet governments in Eastern Europe, a reasonable person could believe that a third European war was imminent in a matter of months or even weeks.  One itchy trigger finger during the Airlift...
