  •  I'm thinking of premodern China and Japan as well. (0+ / 0-)

Harmony, tolerance, co-operation? Oh, bosh. The harmonious village society of rural China was apt to go into insta-lynch mode the moment it felt threatened. If you want to have a snapshot of the grisly details, check out the first chapter of Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior, for example, which tells how one of her aunts was driven to infanticide and suicide for the "crime" of having an illegitimate child (something which, by definition, a woman cannot have sole responsibility for, even if you insist on treating it as a crime. Wonder if the child's father was in the lynch mob?)

No more tradition's chains shall bind us,
Arise ye slaves, no more in thrall.
was not written into the Internationale as a decoration or rhetorical flourish. Traditional society is founded on the demand to conform to standards that you have never agreed to, did not help formulate, and are not allowed to change -- a whited sepulcher, but within filled with dead men's bones. The fact that premodern traditions may look nostalgically cute from the outside makes them worse, not better. As the French sociologist Marcel Bloch pointed out, "You cannot argue with a song."

"They smash your face in, and say you were always ugly." (Solzhenitsyn)

    •  ... hang on a second (0+ / 0-)

how is something that happened to Maxine Hong Kingston's aunt representative of the entire pre-modern culture?  I mean, doesn't that sort of assume nothing whatsoever has changed in China for the thousands of years prior to the present era?

Also: anything on Africa, India, pre-Christian Greece, pre-European-colonization Americas, aboriginal Australia, ancient Russia ...?
