It's one thing to play to "canned backing tracks." It's expensive to hire a band or orchestra, and the most important parts are those of the soloists. So if there isn't enough money (or even just not enough room on stage), it's not the end of the world to perform with a taped accompaniment. However, it's considered cheating for  soloists to use tapes in order to prevent mistakes from being heard.

In steamroller's defense, one might say that they needed to do it for sound reasons (i. e. -- because some of the instruments are hard to mike and would be difficult to hear without the tape -- it was a big show with many people on a big stage with lots of props and some noisy effects), but it's better to find a way to do it live.

The conservative nutjob thing comes through in steamroller's lack of inspiration. The show was like a bunch of friends going through a routine in order to collect a check. At the same time as the real steamroller was playing in Sacramento, there was another touring group playing the music of steamroller in San Francisco. My colleagues who played that show said that the fake steamrollers are better than the real steamrollers! Go figure!
