One factor that may also need to be taken into account is personal debt: it's a symptom of being underpaid relative to cost of living, which is why righties employ "personal responsibliity" type rhetoric whenever it comes up. It would be useful, I think, to study if and how this varies by region. For example, I'd expect areas that have or have had housing bubbles, e.g. California, to have a higher debt to income ratio (there may be better chosen statistics, of course).
