  •  Great diary, and I wholeheartedly agree. (17+ / 0-)

I ride my bike every day in an urban environment that some call the "Murder Capitol of the USA." I ride in "good" neighborhoods, "bad" neighborhoods and every type of neighborhood in between. I have never feared for my life in any of those neighborhoods from gun violence, or even from a street mugging.

I have had conversations here with the concealed carry and open carry promoters who say they would never come to the Windy City because of the murder rate. I find their irrational fears and paranoia sadly comical. They have this (imagined) vision, perhaps based on watching too many cop TV shows, or perhaps from talking among themselves (other uninformed, paranoid folks) at the shooting range, of what daily life in the "big city" is like.

But here's the truth: If I get killed on a city street, it will be by someone texting while driving, not someone with a gun.

In March 2011, I was run over from behind by a guy who was texting while driving. Luckily, I was not seriously injured. But the close calls I have had with people either texting or simply being on the phone while driving are too numerous to list here.

The city has made some fairly minimal efforts to do better for cyclists and pedestrians, but vehicles still rule.

I have told our kids (now in their 20s) for years that if I die "before my time," it will likely come at the hands of a texting driver. I have told them this over the years to reinforce that they should never text and drive, and shouldn't even use the phone and drive.

I think they're good about it. I have it drummed into their heads. (This notion was reinforced when a visiting professor at their university was run over and killed by a texting driver while he rode his bike to work.)

I am sorry to hear about your injuries. Suffice it to say, we have to keep going. You have really made great strides. Congratulations.

    Thanks again for the diary.
