It is something of a myth that there are people hiding in the bushes of Central Park (or even the bushes of  Pelham Bay Park) waiting to murder you in NYC. Yes. there are arguments between people that get ugly, domestic violence, there are date rapists and con-men as in any city… and this is all very serious. But random street violence that targets the innocent passerby? It's a myth… A fantasy from a movie version of NYC.
In my younger days, I would quite often walk around Harlem or Central Park or Washington Square park in the middle of the night, drunk off my ass, and never had any problem of any sort.

The whole idea that crime is everywhere and that everyone everywhere is out to rob you, rape you, or break into your house, is just an untrue myth. Unless you seek it out (by hanging with criminal friends) the odds are tremendously that you will NEVER be the victim of a violent crime.

In the end, reality always wins.
