site I now only lurk at did the same as HuffPo.  He said he wouldn't do it.  I like Markos.  He respects his users.

    •  He's be nuts to do it (7+ / 0-)

It would drive away 80% of the better commenters and diarists and leave only the retired plants and shills.

Barring the occasional--or frequent--flamewar, we all tend to treat each other with courtesy and respect. For an example of a community whose members do not treat each other with courtesy and respect, see the comments section of pretty much any news site that allows anonymous commenting.* If we regularly saw the level of racism, misogyny, trolling, personal attacks, and general bad behavior that most such sites get, I'm guessing that Markos might reconsider that policy.

      * The irony, of course, is that we're respectful and courteous because this is not actually a "free speech zone." We all tend to believe most of the same things, in a broad sense, and people who fall outside of a left-of-center worldview are, with very few exceptions, not welcome. If DK were a site that welcomed conservative views as well as liberal ones, it would be as much of a sewer as any of those other sites.

      •  Actually, we pretty much do welcome all views (3+ / 0-)

provided they're VIEWS and not REQUIREMENTS. Tolerance and respect are the key words.

Too many on the right don't respect our right to hold the views we do, and don't like it when people don't agree with them. And they get obnoxious about it.

I don't really care what you believe, and I don't care if you want to air your beliefs here. Just don't get pissed off when people don't agree with you AND can quote facts to demonstrate that you're factually WRONG.

        •  In theory we do. (0+ / 0-)

In practice the chance that an avowed conservative is going to be able to hang on around here for any significant length of time ranges from slim to none, no matter how respectful or considerate he or she is. In fact, if you can think of one conservative user who has, that's one more than I can come up with.

And that's good! That's why this place doesn't devolve into nonstop insults and namecalling. If I ran a forum for classic car enthusiasts, I doubt anyone would begrudge me for saying that someone who only wants to talk about how much he hates classic cars would not be welcome there. Politics should be no different. We as a community have a right to freedom of association.

But let's not kid ourselves that this is a free speech zone, because it's not.
