  •  Charity= Pretty useless (0+ / 0-)

Charitable giving pretty much just trends along the economic cycle.  So when times are good and few people need help, there is too much charitable giving. When times are rough and lots of people need help- charities go begging. As a safety net- this is the wrong way to go.

    •  But the "charities" that go begging are the ones (1+ / 0-)

thjat help people... the food banks and shelters,. the ones that make the difference to the worst off. Hard times hit those of us on the bottom most that have less discretionary income and often can't deduct.

The shock for me on this is the 32% that go to churches vs the 1% that helps individuals in need
But then we've seen in political field, in republican playoffs, many of the richest donors are  church focused... even Mitt with his huge tax deductible donations to his church...
and I wonder what proportion of church donations go to helping people. Little churches depend on money to keep going...
but mega-churches or 'headquarters" where all the excess money goes...
