  •  DON'T LET THEM DO THIS! (8+ / 0-)

They tried to put this thing in Long Island Sound. At that time it was called "Broadwater". It's an extremely bad plan and it took us 8 years and three campaigns to kill it. Every time we thought we had it, it came back again.
Look at the security arrangements, just as one point. In LISound they were specifying a 1.5 mile RADIUS security exclusion zone. NO "unauthorized" boats within that perimeter. Every day, an LNG tanker would pull up to it or leave. That would also have an exclusion zone around it, enforced by Coast Guard gunboats.
In LIS, the tankers would have to go through a narrow spot called the Race. That's the only place a boat with more than a couple feet of draft can safely enter or leave the Sound. That would be closed for a couple hours a day for these tankers to transit. ALL other traffic would stop. All private boats, fishing boats, et cetera, stopped at gunpoint. The disruption of boat traffic was one of the strongest campaign items because it united commercial fishermen, yacht owners , recreational fishermen and all the marinas and boating suppliers all up and down the coast.
And this isn't even addressing  the danger this thing represents. If you could make a better target for terrorism than this thing I'd like to hear your idea. If it ever detonated, the shockwave would be approximately that of the Nagasaki blast.
And it's completely unnecessary. Many of the LNG tankers have regasification systems onboard. All they need is a portal to the pipeline at the dock.
But the consortium that was pushing Broadwater included TransCanada (KXL) and Shell and several friends of Bush and Cheney and they had their cronies on the FERC and they pushed this with everything they had.
It took a huge continued grassroots effort that eventually involved the governors of both CT and NY, mayors of all the major cities on both sides of the Sound and thousands of people who's businesses rely on the Sound to kill this thing off.
Fight this with everything you've got and don't let up when it looks like you've stopped it.

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!
