  •  This year I happened upon the books of (4+ / 0-)

LL Barrett which are set in my neck of the woods. I'm sure people who live in places like NY City, Chicago, etc find this totally ordinary but for me to read a pretty good mystery tale whose locations I can identify was a bit of a thrill. The place where the protagonist's brother ostensibly lives is in walking distance of my house so I took a stroll with the dog to see if I could identify the "brick Tudor" home the author might have had in mind. (I think I know.) The protagonist has been experiencing some unusual side effects due to injuries suffered in a brutal mugging and goes home to a place whose dust he had shaken from his shoes years ago to stay with his half brother. Their relationship is  complicated. The story was rather well done & though there is the "psychic" element she handles it well & rather matter-of-factly, without too much woo-woo stuff. It's just there, part of the reality. (Well, the old lady in the bakery is a bit out there but it is handled in a rather low key way.)

Where are we going and what am I doing in this handbasket?
