  •  The republic has faced Palmer Raids, McCarthyism (9+ / 0-)

Watergate, and other threats to a constitutional form of gov't.  The current times are at least as dangerous as any of those were.  These times may be even more dangerous given the vastly enhanced technological capabilities Uncle Sam now possesses and given the sales job that was performed on the citizenry after 9/11.

You mention one of the most dangerous aspects of the ongoing assault on our founding document--the "bipartisan" nature of it.  In hindsight, those of us who thought in 2008 that "Change" meant at least a cutting back of the worst excesses of the W/Cheney era were clearly mistaken.  The assumption that the first Con Law prof ever to occupy the WH shared our sensitivities on this subject proved to be ill-founded.

Problem is, the Intelligence Committees on the Hill largely share the same viewpoint.  A necessary reining in of executive power in the Nixon years was forced by an assertive Congress.  Today, w/ obvious exceptions, e.g. Merkley, Udall, and Wyden, most of Congress meekly goes along.  DiFi is pretty much of a lapdog as Senate Intel Chair.

I wish I saw a way out of this conundrum.

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?
