  •  Very interesting commentary. (6+ / 0-)

I think a few things are at play here.

    1. A sizable percentage of the movie going audience believes that abortion should be a crime.  So a character who is casual, or unaffected by having one will turn off some of the audience, and that will reduce the profitability of a movie.

    2. Abortion is an unpleasant experience and the decision to have one is not made lightly.  No one sets out to have an abortion.  I know many women who have had abortions, and most of them do not regret it.  But all of them would have preferred to not have to go through an unwanted pregnancy in the first place.  So this also brings angst into stories, and generates unpleasant memories for many women.  This makes it less likely to be a story point in movies that are lighter fare, such as Knocked Up.

    3.  Unwanted pregnancies in fiction are usually plot devices.  And the decision to abort is less dramatic than the decision to (and consequences of) carrying a pregnancy to term.   I think of the Steve Martin movie Parenthood.  In reality, Mary Steenburgen's character might well have decided to have an abortion.  But the movie is a comedy, and a celebration of parenthood.  So its fitting that the movie ends in a maternity ward, not a Planned Parenthood clinic.
