  •  The old "fall down the stairs" miscarriage plot. (1+ / 0-)

If I never see another pregnant TV woman fall down the stairs or fall off a ladder for that storyline-convenient miscarriage (so the show can avoid controversy, and much more moral than a woman having the autonomy to take control of the situation, I guess) it'll be too soon.

There are desperate girls who've thrown themselves down stairs because It Worked On TV.

And THAT'S one of the reasons why abortion needs to be talked about in pop culture as a realistic part of women's health, and as part of the storytelling of the media.

When Scarlet expresses her anger at being pregnant after Rhett raped her in Gone With the Wind, he says, “Cheer up.  Maybe you’ll have an accident.”  She tries to hit him, loses her balance, and falls down the stairs, having a miscarriage, and almost dying.

And then there is Leave Her to Heaven, where an evil woman purposely stages an accidental fall down the stairs to cause her own miscarriage.

Unlike the TV shows you refer to, however, neither of these movies was trying to avoid controversy with these scenes.
