  •  Okay here's a list of all D legislators in IA-03 (2+ / 0-)

    Senate:
dist - name, elected, Obama% two party
    8th - Mike Gronstal, 1984, 55.3% (Council Bluffs)
15th - Dennis Black, 1994, 52.5% (1/2 of dist overlaps, Polk outside Des Moines)
    16th - Dick Dearden, 1994, 67.8%
    17th - Jack Hatch, 2002, 68.8%
    18th - Janet Petersen, 2012, 70.7%
    21st - Matt McCoy, 1996, 59.8%

The least red GOP held sen district is still SD-13 at 52.1% Romney where they just won a special election. Possible candidate state sen Joni Ernst's is 59.1% Romney.

    House:
dist - name, elected, Obama% two party
    26th - Scott Ourth, 2012, 50.8% (Warren County)
30th - Joe Riding, 2012, 48.4% Obama loss (eastern Polk)
    31st - Rick Olson, 2004, 62.5%
    32nd - Ruth Ann Grimes, 2010, 74.2%
    33rd - Brian Meyer, 2012, 69.4%
    34th - Bruce Hunter, 2002, 69.4%
    35th - Ako Abdul-Samad, 2006, 78.2%
    36th - Mari Anderson, 2012, 66.3%
40th - John Forbes, 2012, 49.9% Obama loss (Urbandale, Polk Cnty)
    41st - Jo Oldson, 2002, 69%

However Republicans astoundingly hold these seats:
    15th - Mark Brandenburg, 2010, 58.1% Obama (Council Bluffs)
    16th - Mary Ann Hanusa, 2010, 52.8% (Council Bluffs)
    42nd - Peter Cownie, 2008, 50.5% (West Des Moines)
    43rd - Chris Hagenow, 2008, 51.2% (West Des Moines)

They have one more seat that's 50.4% Romney and the rest are all very red.

So on paper, Mike Gronstal, Dennis Black, and Matt McCoy all look like decent candidates, but only Gronstal wouldn't have to give up his senate seat.
