  •  I agree with your overall sentiment that the (0+ / 0-)

States will likely lead the way - but I also think that very reality is at odds with the assumption there is an "US" way of doing medicine. There is demonstrably not a single American way of doing healthcare. The US already spends more as a percentage of GDP on its own government-run or financed programs like Medicare, Medicaid or the VA than the British do on their NHS.

That's why the single payer movement has correctly reframed their call as "Medicare for all" - simply expand something we're already doing that is presumably an "American" way of doing things.

Final point - if there is something peculiar about the American way of teaching or practicing medicine - then that should be a cause for concern considering the lagging outcomes in the US versus other first world health care systems.

    •  There definitely is something different (0+ / 0-)

about how we teach and practice medicine in the US and it is the biggest reason why we spend 2X the rest of the G8 and have poorer outcomes. And no one talks about it. If you went to your primary care physician with chest pain, and someone in London went to the NHS with the same symptoms, the diagnosis and treatments would not be the same. There would be some overlap, but not as much as you would think. And it starts in medical school. And that is why our costs are higher, not because of single payer, or insurance company profits, or insurance company CEO pay, or physician compensation, or drug profits. All of those play a role, and are a convenient things to complain about, but even collectively they are a very small part of the problem.
