I've heard shit over and over from civilians about why people join the military and how they are "supporting the military industrial complex" and the "plutocracy" or whatever. People enlist in the military for a variety of reasons and it's been my experience that often that reason is because they have no other options to improve their situation or that of their family. Some people have parents who can afford to send them to college, others have opportunities to earn enough to put themselves through college but many don't. I joined the navy because at the time it was coming down to a choice between the service or starving. No, I didn't always make the best decisions but what young person does? I'm as fed up as I can be listening to people who are absolutely clueless characterize my service as some kind of "betrayal" or like I prostituted myself out to the MIC. I served honorably and proudly and I was good at my job, (F-14A airframe mechanic) and when I got out, I moved on to other things. I never regretted serving though, despite the scorn from some really self righteous, entitled asshats. Civilians, even well meaning civilians just don't get it because they have no common frame of reference. I don't hold that against them, except for the ones who take their ignorance and put it on display by spouting stupid, nonsensical crap about things they know nothing about.
