  •  Therefore: Trickle-Down. (11+ / 0-)

I've no doubt he believes this is the best possible thing for the world.

If you were watching politics in the '68-'71 the Left, especially the Very Serious, Big Picture type opinion-makers noticed the US was the world's leader in almost every material thing you could have or use, or thing you could make.

Think: 40% of the worlds cars. 50% of the world's calories consumed. Not exactly those things, but not far from them.

Pick anything related to industrial, farm, science production, and consumer items, and the US, compared to the whole world together, was at near-majority through overwhelming majority levels of use/creation. (Today, mainly weapons and entertainment sales.)

So the serious people, who had both training in political theory and some foresight, realized this global imbalance could not go on forever.

I didn't follow the argument much after that, opting to fall in love and have children and a life. But I'm sure a lot of those Very Serious Big Picture People, being pragmatists and Realpolitikers all, ended up thinking 'the most effective instrument to work change is Business.' Where 'Top-Down" is Boss. And that 'analysis' got credence with a lot of politics-craving people and the rest is just arithmetic on how we got to where we are today.

Of course, not anticipated was that Mammon will always eat you up, even if you imagine you control it.

he gives a damn?  Seriously.  Pretty speeches aren't enough, sorry.  What makes you think he gives a damn?

      •  Because he's not a cartoon, he's a real person, (5+ / 0-)

and the community he has sought and embedded himself in, like every other community on earth, tells themselves that they are doing good.

Whether he, like any person can, tricks himself into believing it or not... the statement is more reasonable than 'he believes in nothing (making money/being cool/etc).'

Which seems a bit over-emotional about the business. More the accusation of one feeling personally injured, it seems to me. One side, the evidence that he's a member of humanity and the expectation that he'd have modes similar to every other human being; the other side, suspicion and disdain only.

I'll go with the evidence-based guess.

        •  Not every "real person" (0+ / 0-)

is a kind, decent person who wants the best for everyone; and I believe we've seen the kinds of communities this one in particular has sought out and embedded himself in.

We might have been better off if he had been a cartoon.
