It was a required class starting when I was in junior high.  Our home ec teacher was not actually a bully, but she sure knew how to take the fun out of sewing and cooking with her extreme, nitpicking critiques of everything we put our hands to.  The thing is when I was in grade school, I was in 4-H and I actually liked making things like aprons and dresses. My family loved my tuna-noodle casserole (or so they said).  It was all fun and kind of creative in 4-H.  Then, we took home ec and the joy of cooking (and sewing) was forgotten.  My best memory is of our teacher telling us how disgusting it was that some families left the milk carton on the table while they ate dinner.  She said, "Girls, I would be too repulsed to eat if I saw a milk carton on the table during dinner."  I was a little nervous that she may have somehow known something about family dinners at my house!

I hated the sewing unit and was really not good at it.  We didn't make clothing - I remember we made pillows. Mine was a shark-shaped pillow. Badly sewn, but I had it for several years, and it may still be at my parents' house.

I did like the cooking unit, but (at least in my memory) we spent most of the semester on sewing, not cooking.

Yes we can! Yes we did! Yes we will!
