...but this may not be a good thing.

Some new research is raising questions about whether white roofs actually make the problem worse in the long run by causing warming the atmosphere, dispersing cloud cover, and affecting pollutants in the air.

Jacobson’s climate modeling found that white roofs would, in fact, cool urban surfaces. But by cooling that air near the ground, the roofs increase local air stability, which prevents moisture and energy from traveling upward to form clouds. Fewer clouds means that a greater share of sunlight ends up hitting the Earth’s surface, which means hotter overall temperatures. This cloud effect could well offset the roof effect....Jacobson also found that the increased reflectivity seems to increase the potency of heat-trapping particles such as black carbon.
Basically the best option is to remove the solar energy from the system entirely...likely by converting it into electricity via solar cells.

It's nice to see people taking climate change seriously, and it will be interesting to see long-term studies on a town that completely converts to white-roofs. However, let's remain cautious about this and any geo-engineering tactic, no matter how minor it may seem.

Our Fair City...a campy post-apocalyptic science fiction radio epic!
