...that if he'd stopped with this part:

"I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person,"
He might have been okay.  After all, that might well be an accurate depiction of what he personally saw.

As it is, the rest of it plays into some very old and hurtful stereotypes -- and the old southern idea of blacks being people of limited intelligence, rather childlike, who needed the firm guiding hand of the white race to keep them in place.  And since that was perceived to be the natural order of things, of course blacks were happier back then.

Missing from it is any recognition of the fact that in those days many (probably most) blacks kept a pretty tight cover on what they were really feeling or thinking in the presence of whites.  And doing so was for self defense, because letting the white overlords know what you were really feeling or thinking was apt to be rather dangerous.

yourself to be a godly person, calling somebody godly is a compliment, not an insult.

Remember who we're talking about, too --

This is not a Northeastern city guy.

This is a guy who started at quarterback ahead of Terry Bradshaw.  He had an opportunity to play in the NFL and turned his back on it because he would rather stay home and hunt ducks.

"This is a guy who started at quarterback ahead of Terry Bradshaw.  He had an opportunity to play in the NFL and turned his back on it because he would rather stay home and hunt ducks."

He's a homophic and religious bigot, so he called some people godly, but essentially condemned others because of sexual orientation and their religious beliefs because they didn't include Jesus(also demonstrating his complete ignorance of Islam, while inadvertantly smearing Judaism).

This is why I could never be a so-called "conservative" like you, always bending over backwards to defend ignorant bigots.  But hey, he passed up an opportunity to play football, so all is forgiven in your mind.
