  •  Real irony is Phil is now compared to Rosa Parks (5+ / 0-)

I was still wrapping my head around the MLK and Lincoln comparisons when I found the Parks comparison.  However, I don't think this guy really is as dense as he appears as he is educated with an advanced degree.

My guess is his comments, while reflecting his worldview (there is a video of a sermon 3 years ago where he railed against LGBT folks), he meant to do an "in-character" characterization for the redneck followers of his show.  However, he didn't realize what sort of publication GQ is and hammed it up in a tone deaf performance (see, there is purpose to a theater minor).  The backlash from this less than bravura performance has caught him off guard as surely as it did Paula Deen.
(for the record I grew up in the Jim Crow South and don't recall any singing or any great jubilation that "Massa" took care of all the problems a "darky" would ever have

If he's that educated (and I believe you) then he certainly SHOULD know what sort of publication GQ is, and to whom it appeals.

But your idea that his interview was intended to be part of his shtick certainly sounds about right: he was trying to remain in character.

I am less than convinced that he ever picked cotton.

with you; I now note he has been compared to Martin Luther (comparisons to MLK were made first rattle out the box so he has to fight Rush and Beck over who really inherited the civil rights mantle from MLK)
