who would even talk to him in real life?

He has money? I know nothing about him. I'm going to check it out. How a bum like him has millions.

And Why do they keep showing camels and sewing needles? Who makes this stuff. That's what I always see concerning this topic.

Don't they know that the "needle" Jesus refereed to, was a small ditch that people had dug under the city walls so they could get in and out after the city gates were closed at night.

        Not a sewing needle.

btw; The guy who narrated the first video, duck dynasty is fake, is really talented. He had a lot of good points. But they all went out of mind/head because of the loud cursing. Would be much better, with less verbosity.

All I know about this duck dynasty stuff is that until tonight I just glanced at headlines here. Then I saw your name Vyan, and you are such a great writer. I always read your diaries. So now I know what this duck is that I keep seeing diaries about.

I try not to watch tv. Except General Hospital and one or two shows if I'm desperate. I watch movies on youtube. I've seen everything on hulu.

I never watch these reality shows. I don't care about who gets thrown off the island. I have somewhat of a life.

This duck guy makes me nauseous.

That's why I only share my mind with people I trust with it.

I don't get a thrill at watching these idiots foam at the mouth.

And I suggest that if these people want to preach they should at least have the decency to get their Bible facts correct. A sewing needle? How stupid is that?

Yes a rich man has no chance of getting into heaven. Especially the ones who exploit their workers and choose to starve children, etc.

I have a College Minor in Philosophy. Mostly Bible study. Fabulous Professor. Dr Hong.

Besides, being well indoctrinated into the Catholic Religion since birth and the Great Grand-daughter of an Eastern European Orthodox Rabbi.

Right wingers will have to do their homework to debate religion with me.

Especially what Jesus said and meant. That's my specialty. That and the old Testament.

        •   If you think Jesus was talking about a low gate (0+ / 0-)

or a hole under Jerusalem's wall, you're nuts.

They had sewing needles in those days. Made out of bone, not steel, but they had them.

He said exactly what he meant. Huge animal. Tiny, tiny hole. Ain't happening, rich boy.

And regarding who goes to heaven and who goes to hell?  He made that clear even more forcibly in Matthew 25: 34 to 46.

34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’

40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’

45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Note: Nothing about going to church, nothing about building crystal cathedrals--or massive satellite broadcast networks-- nothing about standing on street corners shouting out the ten commandments, nothing about reading the Gospel every day, nothing about writing the biggest check to the mission fund ....very simply, "Did you help those who needed help?"  Heaven or hell. Based on loving kindness for your fellow man.

Freedom has two enemies: Those who want to control everyone around them...and those who feel no need to control themselves.

Your right Sirenus about your comments.

BUT do you know if Phil did any of those things or not???

Did or does he help the less fortunate??  do you know for a fact that he does not??

As for me I reserve judgment for GOD when it comes to other men's actions.

I can still consider what they do as a sin according to the bible, BUT they have to answer to GOD for their actions, not me, not GLAAD, not A & E,...... GOD!!!

          •  Camel (0+ / 0-)

I've read where the translation misinterpreted the word 'camel' when it meant a rope.  Jesus wasn't talking to fools so He said it was easier for a rope to go through the eye of a needle than it was for a wealthy man to enter Heaven.  That is the true translation and it does make more sense than a camel since the people back then weren't stupid.  Later translators were not perfect.

            •  If you think about some of his figures of speech (0+ / 0-)

you can see he exaggerated for the sake of humor and to make a point (having a "beam" in your eye?), but we think we have to take every detail literally, because the writers didn't take down the crowd's laughter.  The camel and the eye of the needle is the same level of exaggeration as the beam in one's eye or "straining out gnats and swallowing camels."  The last is a humorous reference to a practice still followed by observant Jewish homemakers and cooks today: since the meat of insects (indeed, by our system of classification today, all invertebrates) except locusts or grasshoppers, is not Kosher, Jews try to avoid eating them ACCIDENTALLY as well as intentionally (the rabbis call this "building a fence around the Torah), and hence they wash all vegetables thoroughly to remove all insects, living or dead.  Of course, now that we all believe in sanitation, Gentiles do that too, but observant Jews are more thorough.  The Pharisees in Jesus' time washed their produce also -- as did Jesus himself, most likely -- but he compared the fanaticism of some (not all) of the Pharisees on trivial matters, while letting huge moral lapses go, to a cook who would carefully strain out the tiniest gnat (from his soup, for example), yet swallow a whole camel, which is also a non-Kosher animal.

The obstacle to rich people getting into heaven (or more accurately, into the KINGDOM of heaven, which refers to a heavenly state of mind or attitude) is the SIZE of their EGOS, hence the small hole that a camel-sized ego cannot get through.  Some people can handle a lot of money without enlarging their ego; they HANDLE it for their own and others' benefit, rather than letting it POSSESS them.  But letting one's ego grow to become a "cartoon" of a rich person can only be cured by getting rid of a bunch of that money to a GOOD cause.  The crowd knew very well which wealthy people were abusive to them and which were kind and generous, and they could well picture the abusive ones trying to stretch the eye of a needle enough to get a camel in!

I can't imagine a first century Jewish audience of people who worked hard for a living NOT laughing at those ridiculous pictures!

Jesus was asked a number of times what one had to do to get into heaven. Including being asked by a rich man. The answer was, "Sell everything you have, give the money to the poor and follow me."

I think Jesus meant that literally. Perhaps it was intended as the ultimate exercise in humility but I do think it was literal, not figurative. "Sell all you have....." is a pretty clear command. To assume that the meaning was symbolic seems to me just another way to let the rich make a gesture or two and keep their riches while others suffer.

        •  Camels and needles (3+ / 0-)

Jesus said it would be "easier for a camel to walk through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven."  He didn't list any exceptions.

Ride easy, cowboys/girls, both of you!

As Euclid pointed out, "Any two things that are equal to the same other thing are also equal to each other."

Whether Jesus spoke of the Jerusalem city gate of that name (Eye of the Needle Gate) or a literal sewing needle's thread-hole, the effect (and therefore Jesus' point) is the same: No camel shall pass; the opening is too small. Completely equal cases.

So, as they sometimes say in the military, "Save it for the enemy!"

          My $0.02, anyway.....   :-)

        •  The Eye of the Needle (0+ / 0-)

It wasn't a ditch; it was a small back gate to Jerusalem that required camels to be fully unloaded (unburdened) to pass through; a metaphor for rich people needing to fully divest themselves of their wealth and trappings of wealth to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

        •  The EYE of a needle! (0+ / 0-)

Did "a small ditch dug under a city wall have an "eye"? NO!

It does refer to a sewing needle! How do you think they made their clothes.
The earliest bone sewing needle dates to 61,000 BC.

    •  Jaxpagan's was first and better I think. (10+ / 0-)

But Dusty's YouTube video here was the best. Thanks, Vyan, that was a treat. And gracias for the introduction. I'm going to have to keep my eye on this Dusty character.

Here's Jaxpagan's rant (diary, if you will). For those interested, it takes a little different approach.

    •  Interesting diaries. All just PR for the (0+ / 0-)

guy who is now famous.  He has it made for life as a right wing icon.
I do not see how anyone can think that "reality" TV is at all real.  Cheap and bad actors, lousy stupid story line (usually at jr high girl level trying to exclude the "out" people).  I enjoyed some of the locations, but eventually the characters got so obviously unreal that I stopped watching.
Until this big fuss, I had never heard of the duck bearded folk, but that they are fake is no surprise.  REAL back woods people would never perform for TV cameras.
