    ... pulled out the electrification of their two electrified divisions, 438mi in the Rockies, Harlowton, Montana to Avery, Idaho, and 207mi along the Pacific Northwest Coast, Tacoma to Othello, Washington.

    The bean counters decided in 1972 that the copper in the overhead electrical supply was worth more as scrap than in use. AFAIR, the decision was made just before the copper bubble collapse, and also, of course, just before the oil gas crisis, when if they hadn't pulled it out, in 1973 the same bean counters might have said the thing to do was to connect the two divisions together.
