    ...dates back to the first few centuries of the church, where they would the Greek character of chi (Χ) to stand for Christ, since it was the first character in the word Χριστός (Christos).

    That tradition can still be seen in the continued use of one of Christianity's oldest symbols, the chi-rho:

    ...which represents the first two characters (Χρ).

    Sometimes having all that theological education is useful when more conservative Christians try to play the "Christianer than thou" game...
