we're close to the edge, so we chose not to take all the deductions we legally could, in order to keep our modified adjusted gross income over the Federal Povery Line, on order to NOT qualify for expanded medicaid (mediCal), in order to be eligible through the CA Exchange to get on a Silver plan through Kaiser (our longtime HMO, where we do indeed get to keep our doctors and know how to work with the system), with a not insignificant subsidy. Yes, we pay a little more in taxes than we would otherwise. But it is well worth it.

Here's one reason why, besides concern about changing and potential limits under Medicaid coverage: See beverlywoods' great diary with background on estate recovery, part of a series. My wife is 55+, so this could affect her.
