A traditional high power high voltage transformer is big, runs hot, and requires a lot of copper and iron. The ingredients of those transformers won't get cheaper, while the ingredients in switching power supplies are getting cheaper.

The payback is biggest on the really huge, long distance, high power transmission lines, so they are going DC first. As time goes on, the electronics get cheaper. We will start seeing shorter and lower power DC interconnects as they become cost competitive.
