    from the opposite side of the fence - on TV, like you, but in a house of Stevensonian democrats. What we thought about the white kids who were screaming taunts at the black children integrating the school was probably similar to what you thought about the black kids. As you point out, for the young ones, who had not had time or opportunity to escape and see the world outside the hate-bubble, we were probably unfair to them. Some - I'm guessing even many - of them probably turned out to learn as you did, and be freed of that well-taught hatred.

      I know that I didn't see the pathetic ugliness until I stepped away and looked back.

      You gotta love your folks but you don't have to agree with them.

      I try to keep that in my mind with my own kids. For example, my oldest boy, who is a semi-devout Christian does not agree with LGBT equality. We argue about it but I really do respect his opinion. I just don't agree with it.
