  •  We have found that hospitals are quite amenable (7+ / 0-)

to payment plans. When I called to set up a payment plan after my son's hospitalization this summer, they kept asking if I was comfortable with what I was offering to pay, urging me not to overextend myself. I ran into a snafu this month and was not able to pay the installment on the agreed-upon date, so I called them to let them know it would be a week later. No problem, they made a note that I had called, and I made the payment a week later. As long as you stay in touch with them and let them know if things are tight, and as long as you make a good faith effort to make any kind of payment, they will accommodate you. It's not in their best interest to squeeze you to the point that they need to call a collector.

    •  Son2 got double pneumonia at 2 years old (5+ / 0-)

and had to spend four nights in a hospital ... I didn't get him all the way paid for until he was 7 ... $30 every other week. County hospitals are a huge blessing.
