  •  it's worse than that (23+ / 0-)

Every week thousands will exhaust their state benefits and lose their help. If they don't extend probably another 3 million end up out in the cold next year with no help.
I am one of them, lost my job of over 30 years when the  company went under, I am almost 60 and based on my luck so far am pretty sure no decent job is waiting for me.

    •  I lost my job at your age and it is, indeed, (9+ / 0-)

tough to find a new one. Hope your search is successful and short. Love your user ID, btw.

I saw the light about 10 years ago. Then again I guess I would have been considered a moderate these days. I voted for Gore because the economy was good under Clinton, the rest is history.

I am a former 3rd generation Republican and there will be no 4th Generation as in 2003, I joined my step kids and became a Democrat.  In my upbringing, I was taught that only Democrats start wars and Iraq put an end to that.  My Grandmother taught me that only Democrats interfere in other folks lives.  Tell that to the women in Texas (or for that matter, any Red state).  Or tell that to anyone who supports Marriage Equality and they can point to who's on their side!  In my conversations with my grandfather, I was taught that you paid the bills, before you celebrated.  Under Bush, we didn't pay the bills but we sure partied for the 1% with those ruinous tax cuts.  Many don't remember, that Republicans were some of the first environmentalists and today's GOP seems to go out of their way to trash the environment.

My father pointed out that under Ike, we got the National Highway system.  Today's Republicans don't even want to fund maintenance of the bridges on the Interstate.

No, there's no reason for any non-Taliban-egenical to support the Republican party anymore, unless you are part of the 1%, who god forbid should have to pay it forward!

changed much over the years - but the Republican party has changed a WHOLE lot. I would be ashamed to be associated with what the Republican party has become and today's Republican would kick me out on my ears (pro choice since the early 70's, gay friendly always, etc.).

    •  Same boat (0+ / 0-)

I'm a 50-year-old "lazy bum" who has been unemployed for 1 1/2 years after my Bush-loving publisher decided to save $18K - on a four-day week - by chucking me.  I've sent more than 200 resumes, did 13 job interviews, without luck; not even local stores respond to applications.

My benefits end when I file tomorrow or Monday.  This money is what I use to give Mom rent (she needs the money), pay for internet service, food ... and job interviews and bus trips for malls for applications (I have not driven in 15 years due to epilepsy).  Should this end, heaven knows when I'll begin working.

The comeback began in Virginia ... it's time to make it grow in 2014!
