Activists were unable to recognize quotations from the Bible and went after Robertson for paraphrasing and/or quoting the Bible. (The "blacks seemed to be happy back then" didn't bother anyone until the "sin" stuff failed to generate enough outrage.)
70% of the population is Christian. Once word got out about exactly what Robertson said, the reaction from conservative Christians overwhelmed the people who were offended by what he said.
Basically, gay activists kicked an anthill. Robertson was a complete unknown until the uproar over the GQ interview. Only 10 million people watched his show.
Conservative Christians, by and large, are coming around on gay rights and marriage equality. It was stupid to attack and alienate them.
       Meanwhile, Duck Dynasty thrives.

Back here in the real world it's important to call out bigotry and racism; to reinforce that they're unacceptable in a civilized society.
