    I think it's because hippies represent the one thing that can bring down the economic-social system: Anti-materialism. If word gets out that people can be happy without constant work and struggling to afford the every growing panoply of products that people "need," the whole consumer economy would crumble. And peace, love, and understanding would create mass unemployment among MIC types.

      Abbie Hoffman once said "the '60s are never coming back because you could live on $100 a month back then" - which made it a hell of a lot easier to "be happy without constant work."

      I shared a small 4-bedroom house with friends my first year out of college (1971); my share of the rent was $75. (This was in Brooklyn, NYC, not way out in the boonies somewhere.) I don't think anyone in any large city is going to be able to find a place to live for $75 a month anymore.

      You can't stop progress (or is that "profit"?)
