the issue becomes one of time.  The more money you have,  the more time you are likely to get, because the maintenance and repair  costs on humans do nothing but go up over time.

    Life itself...

..."is an erosion, each day moving the person closer and closer to death"
OTOH, Steve Jobs had all the money in the world, to little avail,  and my neighbor Mrs Romero died peacefully  last month at 101 years of age, surrounded by an enormous loving family that, by and large, individually and collectively, lived in shocking abject poverty and rural squalor. Yet that family cared for her to the end and she died in her own home, humble as it was.

There are other metrics of poverty and wealth than mere money, but they are hard to quantify.

I agree that money is NOT the whole story, but I also think there's something like an elevator effect with money, and if that particular factor sinks low enough, no amount of social connections will save you.

That's what I see in the destruction of agricultural communities in Mexico and Haiti and particularly in China.

What happens when you can't even raise so much as a dollar to buy your kid pencils and paper for school, or the last knife in the house breaks and you can't buy another?

In so many countries whole communities have been reduced to absolute destitution, and no matter how much they may be willing to help each other, there's virtually nothing to help with.

But I still agree with claude that money isn't the only metric, and for many people who haven't sunk quite to the bottom, it probably isn't even necessarily the most important metric.
