paid for by the IOOC, to protect their precious assets in case something goes wrong. And yes, it's probably very pricey, for all the reasons you list.

And as a parent, I would not want my child going there to compete, much less as a spectator.

And as a citizen, I am d__n glad that the President (and VP, and their families) are taking a pass on this one. The nutcase "sign interpreter" in South Africa was tame compared with the security challenges in Sochi.

"Mr. President, it would likely take the entire 82nd Airborne to ensure your safety.  Unfortunately, the Russian government won't grant them all visas."

Still, I'm so glad that the President poked Putin in the eye by appointing so many openly LGBT athletes to be representative on the American team.  A boycott would backfire, as it'd be interpreted in terms of 1980 Moscow/1984 Los Angeles, and would hurt many athletes who only get one chance at winning, but this surely is the next best thing.  Decent chance it'll get the issue discussed during coverage of the Opening Ceremony, which will have one of the biggest TV audiences of the year.

And Putin wanted to show off his empire to slavishly assembled foreign leaders but it sounds like he's going to have to make do with showing off to the diplomatic equivalent of third consular undersecretaries from many Western countries.  That's gonna hurt a lot more than wrestling that bear did.
