    writer (can't remember his name) who was there at about the same time, and was cornered on the street by a gang of toughs who asked him if he was Catholic or Protestant.  He knew he'd get beaten up or worse if he answered wrong, and he didn't know what the right answer was, so he replied that he was an American.  They demanded to know whether he was an American Catholic or an American Protestant.  He then said that he was an American Jew (not true), and they let him go.
