    Most Yanks ingest far too much salt, sugar (and/or corn syrup), fat, and protein. All of those, except the sweeteners, are necessary for your health. It's just that we get more than is good for us. Conventional wisdom acknowledges this with regard to fat; it often regards more protein as good.
    probably in the 1970's.  Before that, people were advised to stay away from refined carbohydrates - you don't want to get fat, don't eat pasta and bread.  Funny that since then we've had the obesity/diabetes epidemic - this despite a decrease in fat intake.  Maybe the advice to avoid fat and the substitute it with more carbs had something to do with it.

      And that's why the USDA/FDA still insists on feeding non-fat chocolate milk to our kids in school — and turning them on to a life of childhood obesity and type II diabetes.
