    Mexico. If you have roots you can sever I would think about Belize possibly.

      I worked in Belize - a pretty small, pretty remote community in the south - for over a year, and I have to say I pity the Americans who buy land there thinking it will be easy to fit in. Maybe to fit into an expat community, but those have gotten pretty pricey too.

      Belizeans are wary of outsiders, particularly Americans. And with reason, I might add. Much of the best seaside land is owned by American missionaries who were going to build churches right there (so got it for basically free) then, ooops, built a house instead.

      The number of children and teens killed by guns in one year would fill 134 classrooms of 20 students each. (Chlldren's Defense Fund, 2013)
