Ta-Nehisi Coates has written about the universality of evil, mostly starting from a racial perspective, but really with the ending point that evil is in all of us, and that racism is only one manifestation. Understanding that those we regard as monsters share our humanity is part of coming to grips with what it means to be human.

(Those links are not working for me this morning. Try Googling Coates's name with the phrases "History's Greatest Monsters" and "A Muscular Empathy.")

We cannot understand love and courage, beauty and forgiveness, without also understanding the dreadful context in which they endure.

    In which they prevail.

Your beautiful diary today is part of the victory of love.

    Bless you, and thank you.

"The true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals." - Barack Obama
