Marketing comes out of "Public Relations" and "Public Relations" comes strait out of the propaganda techniques developed by Edward Bernays during WWI. After the war he was out of work but found a way to leverage the experience he gained in manipulating wartime public opinion into the private sector. The word "Propaganda" became tainted due to the WWI excesses so he coined "Public Relations" and wrote a book called "Propaganda" to market his new business to the world. It's a great little read. Such are the roots of marketing. I hate marketing.

Another good writer on the power of words is Kenneth Burke. His "Grammar of Motives" and "Rhetoric of Motives" were very enlightening.

"There are two kinds of truth, small truth and great truth. You can recognize a small truth because its opposite is a falsehood. The opposite of a great truth is another truth." -- Niels Bohr

A documentary without compare.  Explains so much in this screwed up country - the USA.  Google - available online.  Propaganda.  Psychology.  Mid Century Europe.  Advertising abuses.  Catholic Church.  Nuns.  Self help movement.  Group movement & group therapy.  And so much more.

I recommend this to everyone.  Somewhat long - but it is fascinating and filled with so much information that explains the mess in our country.

      PEACE & Love

here. The BBC Series, in four parts.

Invaluable. We have had almost exactly 100 years of the convergence of psychology, business, and government in their mutual quests to perfect effective propaganda.

iirc, about 1920, a tobacco exec went to a man named Bernays, a cousin of Freud, and complained "Because society disapproves of women smoking, I'm losing all those potential customers.'

Bernays paid a 100 or more young ladies of the upper classes who marched in a Thanksgiving Parade, and had them simultaneously light up cigarettes. This became big news in the newspapers: women breaking a major social taboo.

Bernays put out that the women were lighting, not cigarettes, but 'Torches of Freedom.' 80 years later a few tens of millions of women get dead or truncated lives from tobacco. And Bernays gets honored as a marketing genius.

Seriously, an invaluable series if you want to think clearly about the 'intellectual' environment in which we live in these days of dissolution.
