    I missed the broadcast of the Royal Edinborough Military Tattoo this year again.

    Speaking as an ex drum major (6 years) I know where you're coming from there's nothing quite like the sound of a full highland guard band. It's a truly horrific sound if you're on the other side of the battlefield and hear the wail of a solitary piper beginning to play, having a full guard's accompaniment arrive was hell on the other side as the sound tends to carry and seems to come from no specific direction. Can't say the Scottish are the origin of acoustic warfare but it's definitely one of the best examples still around today. As Oddball (Donald Sutherland) says in "Kelly's Heroes" of his Sherman's loudspeaker system "When we go into battle we like to play music really loud. It sort of calms us down, and it scares the shit out of the enemy."
