high capacity magazines.  No private citizen needs these weapons and, either legally or illegally too many of then end up in the hands of dangerous people.  Adam Lanza (Newtown) acquired his assault rifles legally.  Background checks and gun registration would not have prevented this horrible crime.

Woah! I hear your frustration, and share it.

In the Firearms Law and Policy group we study laws and regulations and think about can be accomplished that will pass muster when the new laws percolate up to SCOTUS. We can be sure that any new laws will be challenged all the way to the Supreme Court.

IMO, your call is politically foolish, and would be something like blowing a couple year's worth of mortgage payments over one weekend in Vegas.

Universal background checks, and requiring all dealers to be licensed, either federally or in the state where they are located will go a long way. Restricting and registering "assault weapons" and high-capacity magazines is already law in some states, and has recently been upheld by the DC Circuit Court of Appeals. Florida is not one of those states.

Supporting three ideas in your state will be a good use of your frustrated energy and passion.

      1. Universal background checks, no private sales exemption.
      2. All dealers must be licensed as FFLs or in the state.
      3. All gun owners must report lost or stolen guns to their local police department within 24 hours.

      Those are politically feasible targets.

    •  Didn't Lanza kill his mom to obtain her firearms? (0+ / 0-)

      Not sure that was legal...

      •  Yes he did... (2+ / 0-)

But she owned the guns legally.  That crime would not have been prevented with background checks or required registration.
