  •  Great story! (5+ / 0-)

Demonstrates why asking those with local knowledge is so important ~ in many ways, as amazing as all the on-line records are, I often think it's the connections to others doing research on the same family/area and the resulting possibilities for collaboration and assistance that are the true wonder of on-line genealogy ;-)

One book (well, the way the author conducted his search) really irritated me.....been a while since I read it (and it's not worth a re-read with so many unread books out there), but he followed the advice rather too well of asking relatives about his family, tramping all over the US and going to Australia, Israel, and South Africa (IIRC ~ could have been somewhere in South America....) ~~ but when he went to the little town in Eastern Europe his family had been from, he spent a couple hours and went back to the nearest city for lunch, as the little town bored him (OK, that's likely a bit of an exaggeration, but not terribly much...).

Needless to say, it was on a second trip where he braved the shtetl for longer that he managed to knock down the brick wall he'd been working on in all those trips around the world.

So, yeah, if I seem a bit like I can get on a high horse of a soapbox about using local knowledge.... I remind myself of that book ;-)

And ancestors in a parish that starts with A..... another nice bit of luck you ran into there ;-)

The worst sin - perhaps the only sin - passion can commit, is to be joyless. (Gaudy Night, Dorothy L. Sayers)
