religion of choice for Europeans at a time European nations were becoming dominant forces of influence in the world.

I assume Christianity, a religious choice easy for people to cling to in the face of Roman imperial cruelty was a better, friendlier option than Islam. Probably also enabled it to ride the coattails of the Roman Empire.

Human population was more or less, exploding in the region. More and more people were exposed and witness to all sorts of organized cruelty. Cities were becoming crowded and suffering, due to disease and hunger, rampant. Religion, Christianity in this case specifically, offered a means of hope, rebuttal, and escape. All this suffering and misery combined to initiate a paradigm towards a second wave (if you consider early Greek and Roman attempts at forms of democracy as the first) of humanism and Christianity served as a catalyst and guide to help bring about that shift and to represent the new humanistic humans.

Unfortunately, it also served as a means of mind control exploited and polluted quite efficiently by those trying to stay in and/or acquire power over people.

On a personal note, I think it's time for a new paradigm shift in which humanity shrugs off religion and its ability to manipulate so we can truly focus on humanism within the greater context of our natural existence here on planet earth.

    Just a thought.
